An oxbow lake is a U-shaped lake water body formed when a wide meander from the main stem of a river is cut off to create a lake.
The Oxbow Community Day includes an ecological walk, history talk, and discussion of the fish and marine research conducted to date.
In 2000 a coalition was formed between government, industry and the community to identify the potential of restoring the ecological function of the Oxbow. On ground work began in 2003 and a number of sites within the Oxbow site have now been revegetated.
One of the major successes of the project is the re-connection of the Oxbow to the surrounding natural waterways, with 13 fish species now being found in the area including yellow perchlet, southern herring, tiger mullet, along with other fish species.
After restoring 4,000 mangroves, water quality has improved and this added habitat now harbours an ecosystem that includes various native bird species, such as the Cattle Egrets, Red-Rumped Parrots and Masked Lapwings.
Come along to this hands-on event to learn more about this important part of Bulimba Creek.

Join the Oxley Creek Catchment Association’s Anthony Delfau to learn about an alternative seed propagation technique, which is being used around the world in ecological restoration, farming and guerilla gardening.
Seed balls are a way to distribute and protect seeds by encasing them in a mixture of clay and compost. Finely ground terracotta clay is added to dry organic compost and the seeds, and then mixed. Water is added to the mixture while stirring, just enough to make the concoction bind together. The mixture is then rolled into small round balls and left in the sun for a day or two to dry, after which time the balls are ready for dispersal. The ball protects the seed until enough rain falls to break through the mixture to allow the seeds to germinate, spurred on by the compost within the ball.
OCCA volunteers are interested in trialling this method. Wear old clothes. Bring an open mind! Anthony will be running this workshop during the Plants and Propagation event at Nyanda State High (see event listing on this page), as well as the Family Day on Sunday 18 July at Oxley Creek Common.
